We all remember the bittersweet summer of 2020. The Etihad was painfully empty, the world had paused, and our greatest-ever playmaker, David Silva, was quietly waving goodbye after a decade of pure magic. For years, El Mago had been the heartbeat of our midfield. The anxiety among us in the fanbase was palpable. How on earth do we replace a genius like that? But Pep Guardiola wasn’t worried. He didn't demand a £100 million signing. Instead, he looked to a local lad from Stockport who had been at the club since he was four years old, and simply told us all to "trust" him.

That lad, of course, was Phil Foden. Today, it’s impossible to deny his status as a bona fide Manchester City legend and a true Premier League icon.

While the wider footballing world spent years debating whether Foden was getting enough minutes as a teenager, those of us who watched him week in and week out knew exactly what Guardiola was doing. He was building a dynasty around one of our own.

The Weight of the Idol

Every Citizen knows that Phil Foden wasn't just shaped by the Manchester City academy; he was shaped by David Silva. Foden was a boyhood supporter of the club, standing on the terraces before he was ever old enough to lace up his boots for the first team. When he finally made it into the senior training sessions, he gravitated immediately toward the Spanish maestro.

In 2017, a wide-eyed Foden admitted that Silva was his ultimate idol. "I try and watch what he does and learn from him and try and do the same things," he confessed. You could see it on the pitch; that same adhesive control, the knack for drifting past opponents effortlessly, the way he seemed to glide across the grass.

But carrying the torch for a club legend is a heavy burden. It’s one thing to look like David Silva in a League Cup tie; it’s entirely another to take the keys to the midfield in the most ruthless league in the world.

Quiz Time: The Breakthrough

Before we get to Foden's explosion into the main man, let’s test your knowledge of his early days. We all know Foden was eased into the first team, but when he made his Manchester City debut in November 2017 in the Champions League against Feyenoord, which legendary player did the 17-year-old replace on the pitch in the 75th minute? (Hold that thought—answer at the bottom!)

Stepping Into the Centre

For years, we watched Foden dazzle on the wings. He was the perfect tactical weapon, hugging the touchline, darting inside, and terrifying full-backs. But the true transformation of Phil Foden; the moment he went from a prodigious talent to an undisputed Manchester City legend; happened during the 2023–24 season.

When Kevin De Bruyne suffered a long-term injury early in the campaign, panic briefly set in among the fanbase. Who was going to unlock the low blocks? Pep Guardiola’s answer was to move Foden into a central attacking role. It was the ultimate test of his evolution, and Foden didn't just pass it; he redefined it.

Playing through the middle, Foden became an absolute monster. He wasn't just scoring nice goals anymore; he was dragging us over the finish line when the pressure was suffocating. He hammered in a sensational hat-trick against Aston Villa, complete with his first career free-kick goal. He was decisive against our fiercest rivals, scoring a vital brace in the Manchester derby.

Pep Guardiola summed it up perfectly that spring: "He loves to play football. He will already be a legendary player because in a short age, the games played, the minutes, the goals scored, the titles won and he is from the home and that is why the connection with the fans is unbelievable". Pep hit the nail on the head. He wasn't just a great player anymore; he was the best current player in the Premier League, scoring goals to win games. He ended that season with a staggering 27 goals across all competitions and rightfully swept up the FWA Footballer of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season awards.

The Meaning Behind the Number 47

What makes Foden so special to us isn't just the sheer volume of medals (by 2024, he became the youngest player ever to claim six Premier League titles). It’s the soul he plays with.

In modern football, superstar attackers demand the number 10 or the number 7 shirt. Foden, despite being the creative hub of the best team on the planet, proudly wears the number 47. He even has the number tattooed on his neck. Why? It’s a permanent tribute to his late grandfather, Ronnie, who passed away at the age of 47. It’s a constant reminder of his roots, his family, and the Stockport streets that made him. When he isn't pinging top-corner strikes in the Champions League, you can usually find him sitting quietly by a lake, fishing; his favorite escape from the madness of modern football.

Quiz Time: European Royalty

Speaking of the Champions League, Foden's pedigree in Europe is unmatched for his age. When he scored against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals in April 2024, it marked a goal in each of his last five starts in the competition. He shares this joint-longest run by an English player with only one other legendary midfielder. Do you know who? (Answer below!)
