Do you remember where you were on the 19th of August, 2018? For most football fans, an early-season fixture between Manchester City and Huddersfield Town might not stand out in the grand tapestry of the sport. But for us, it was the day the beautiful game shifted on its axis.

Sergio Agüero scored a brilliant hat-trick in a 6–1 demolition that afternoon, but the truly breathtaking moment wasn’t a dazzling run or a thunderous strike. It came from a goal-kick. With one swing of his left boot, our goalkeeper launched a laser-guided, 70-yard pass perfectly into the path of Agüero to open the scoring. In that single, breathtaking instant, Ederson became the first Manchester City goalkeeper to provide a Premier League assist.

We had never seen anything quite like it. This wasn’t a desperate punt up the pitch; it was the calculated vision of a world-class playmaker wearing number 31. From the moment he arrived at the Etihad, this Manchester City legend wasn’t just a last line of defence; he was the first point of attack.

The Day the Goalkeeper Evolved

Every serious supporter knows that when Pep Guardiola arrived in England, he needed a very specific profile of player to make his system work. He needed a sweeper-keeper who could break lines, dictate tempo, and possess ice in his veins when pressed by onrushing strikers. The club had already moved on from Joe Hart, but it was when a heavily tattooed Brazilian arrived from Benfica in the summer of 2017, immediately supplanting Claudio Bravo as the first-choice keeper, that the final piece of the puzzle clicked into place.

Ederson’s control and confidence with the ball at his feet fundamentally changed how we watched football. Before him, a backpass under pressure induced panic in the stands. With Ederson, it was an invitation. He would calmly roll the ball out, bait the opposition press, and then bypass them entirely with a clipped pass on the ground or a devastatingly accurate long kick. Though naturally left-footed, he was incredibly comfortable using either foot to retain possession, earning him the moniker of a "midfielder in gloves" from the media.

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given probably summed it up best in 2018 when he boldly declared Ederson to be "the best goalkeeper in the world with his feet". Kasper Schmeichel echoed the praise a year later, simply calling him the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Bravery Behind the Brilliance

But it wasn't just his technical mastery that made him an icon. It was his absolute, undeniable fearlessness. You can't play as high up the pitch as Ederson did without a healthy dose of bravery, and he proved his mettle almost immediately.

In September 2017, during a massive clash against Liverpool, Ederson raced out of his box to clear a bouncing ball and was met by the incredibly high boot of Sadio Mané. The collision was sickening. Ederson suffered a severe kick to the face, requiring eight minutes of on-pitch treatment before being stretchered off. Mané was rightfully sent off, but what happened next cemented Ederson’s cult status.

Any normal player would have been sidelined for a month. Ederson received eight stitches, accepted Mané’s apology (insisting the collision was accidental), and was back in the starting lineup the very next week for a Champions League tie against Feyenoord, sporting a piece of protective headgear. It was this warrior spirit, combined with three consecutive Premier League Golden Glove awards between 2020 and 2022, that made him truly indispensable.

The Hard Yards to the Top

Of course, Ederson wasn't born a superstar. He had to grind his way up the ranks, experiencing setbacks that would have broken lesser players.

Here is where we separate the casual watchers from the true football scholars. Quiz Time: We all know Ederson came to City from Portuguese giants Benfica. But did you know he was actually released by Benfica as a junior back in 2011?. He had to drop down to the Portuguese Second Division to play for a club called Ribeirão, before fighting his way back up the ladder via Rio Ave to eventually rejoin Benfica.

When he finally claimed the starting spot at Benfica in March 2016, he did so by stepping in for an injured compatriot during a massive Lisbon derby against Sporting CP. Do you know which legendary Brazilian goalkeeper he replaced that day? (Hint: It was a former Inter Milan star who won the treble in 2010. Keep reading for the answer).

And when Manchester City finally came calling in 2017, they paid £35 million for his services. That massive fee equalled the record for the largest sum a club had ever paid for a Benfica player at the time; but whose transfer record did he equal?

If you guessed Axel Witsel for the transfer record, and Júlio César as the keeper he replaced, you clearly know your history.

Ederson wears his journey on his skin. His body is heavily covered in tattoos, famously including a rose and skull on his neck, but perhaps the most meaningful is the Portuguese League trophy tattooed on his leg; a permanent reminder of the titles he won with Benfica in 2016 and 2017 before conquering England.

A Legacy Set in Stone

When Ederson finally waved goodbye to Manchester in September 2025 to join Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe, he left behind a staggering legacy. Over eight years, he made 372 appearances across all competitions, winning 18 major honours, and setting a club record with 122 Premier League clean sheets.

He was the bedrock of the team that secured the historic continental treble in 2023, lifting the UEFA Champions League at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. Poetically, in January 2026, he returned to that exact same stadium with Fenerbahçe and won his first major trophy in Turkey, the 2025 Turkish Super Cup, proving that some players are just born winners.

He completely redefined what we expect from the man between the sticks. He made us gasp with his passing, wince at his bravery, and ultimately, cheer for the sheer audacity of his play.
