We all remember the uneasy whispers that echoed around the Etihad during the summer of 2021. The rumours were loud, and the narrative seemed all but written: Bernardo Silva, our diminutive Portuguese maestro, wanted to leave the club. There was talk of a move to Atletico Madrid or AC Milan, and it genuinely felt like we were about to lose one of the most gifted players to ever wear the sky blue shirt.
As a supporter, it’s always heartbreaking when a fan favourite looks for the exit door. But what happened next didn’t just cement Bernardo Silva as a true Manchester City legend; it fundamentally redefined what a modern midfielder could achieve in the Premier League. Instead of downing tools, Bernardo stayed, rolled his sleeves up, and embarked on a campaign so mesmerising that Pep Guardiola openly declared him "one of the best players in the world".
This is the story of how a player with one foot out the door transformed into the ultimate utility man, a European record-breaker, and eventually, the captain of our beloved club.

From the Exit Door to the Ultimate Utility Player
Every Blue knows that Bernardo's early years in Manchester were largely spent providing width out on the right flank. He was brilliant there, of course, using his elegant, left-footed playmaking ability and agility to terrorise full-backs. But the 2021–22 season required something different.
With the squad facing tactical shifts, Bernardo transformed into the ultimate Swiss Army knife. Though functionally a central midfielder, we watched him seamlessly drop into a defensive midfield pivot to dictate tempo, or push right up to the front line to operate as a false 9. His slender 5ft 8in frame belies an astonishing engine; he covers every blade of grass, pressing opponents relentlessly and instantly launching attacks the moment possession is won.
That autumn, his performances were nothing short of breathtaking. He ran the show in a 5–0 demolition of Arsenal and put in a Man of the Match display against Chelsea. The Etihad faithful responded by voting him the club's Player of the Month for both September and October.
Quiz Teaser: He didn’t just stop at two awards. Bernardo went on to set a club record that very autumn. Do you know which month made him the very first player to win the Manchester City Player of the Month award in three consecutive months? (Hold your thought, we'll give you the answer in a minute).
That Perfect Night Against PSG
If you want to pinpoint the exact moment Bernardo’s genius was etched into European history, look no further than November 24, 2021.
Paris Saint-Germain came to the Etihad under the lights. The Champions League group stage is always a tense affair, and against a team boasting world-class attacking talent, we needed absolute control in the middle of the park. Bernardo didn't just play well; he played a literally flawless game.
He became the very first player in the history of the Champions League to register a 100% passing rate in a match. Every single time the ball left his boot, it found a sky-blue shirt. He capped off this staggering Man of the Match performance by providing the assist for Gabriel Jesus in our 2–1 victory, ensuring our qualification to the knockout stages.

A Legacy Set in Stone
The momentum from that season propelled Bernardo to even greater heights. When we needed a hero in the 2023 Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, he stepped up to score a spectacular brace in a 4–0 thrashing. And let's never forget that magical night in Istanbul on June 10, 2023, where he provided the crucial assist to Rodri, securing our first-ever Champions League trophy and completing the historic continental treble.
By the time he was appointed club captain ahead of the 2025–26 season, taking the armband from the departing Kevin De Bruyne, it felt like the only logical step for a man who had given us his absolute all. He even recently celebrated his 100th Champions League appearance in a 4–1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in November 2025.
Quiz Teaser: Beyond his on-pitch heroics, Bernardo is deeply embedded in the dressing room's culture and shares a brilliant bond with his teammates. He even named his pet French Bulldog after one of our standout defenders. Any guesses who?
